This back to school event gifts new backpacks and every teacher-required school supply to every AOS98 elementary student. Held each August at the Boothbay Harbor YMCA Field House, the event welcomes over 350 students and family members. Children are greeted by their school principals and handed a shopping list from their soon-to-be teacher. Off they go to choose a backpack and all their school supplies with the help of many volunteers at the school supply center. From there students visit the Hair Salon where volunteer hair stylists are waiting to offer free back to school haircuts. Nail techs are cleaning and polishing nails, and the Rotary gifts each child with a personal hygiene package.
Hannaford Supermarket offers a healthy food court, while a huge bounce house from Compass Rose Events waits in the wings. New in 2015 was a beautifully designed Children’s Clothing Boutique offering Fall and Winter clothing, shoes and more. Lincoln County Dental offered free dental screenings while the Lions Club did eye testing with a mobile eye test machine.
With one national study showing that parents pay an average of $1,239 on school supplies and related expenses in 2015 — up 7.6 percent from last year — the Set for Success program offers much-needed help to parents and kids.
We continue to accept donations to help offset costs of school supplies. Event Coordinator: Sue Burge (207) 350-1581.
2019 date for this event: Sunday August 18th 1 – 3 , at the Boothbay Region YMCA
